Roasted Sweet Potato Ghost Town Soup
I had quite a few disasters this year from the Taste of Home Halloween magazine so I decided to peruse through it and, instead of following recipes and directions, use it as a source of inspiration and do my own spooky foodie thing.
I came up with the idea of my roasted sweet potato ghost town soup thank to this idea by Taste of Home. I made a sweet potato version of my roasted butternut squash soup and came up with a cool way to garnish a Halloween plate.
Years ago I bought these Wilton Halloween Mini Stencils, along with cans of their Color Mist. What a disappointment! It smelled and tasted terrible and was so light in colour it was pretty much useless.
I had been holding on to them forever and when I was setting up the photograph for the soup, I realized they would make great garnishes if sprinkled with icing sugar.
And they did! I just wiped off the excess and totally loved how the white edible text worked on the black plate.
To make the ghost I poured just a tiny bit of light cream into some sour cream and squeezed in some lime juice.
I added a dollop, got out a toothpick and started to draw the flavoured sour cream away from the center into the shape of a ghost.
Not as artistic at Taste of Home's but I think super cute! I added caraway seeds for the eyes and mouth which I think gave the ghost tons of personality. If you want it to be a spookier ghost you could add some Sriracha hot sauce for the eyes and cut up a black olive for a scary mouth.
I feel I have redeemed myself! I finally came up with something I think is easy to make, very adaptable for a party and the garnish was really visually effective. Yay!!!
